Dear John,
Today, friends and family alike come together for a joyful meal to give thanks and reflect. While we gather, it is essential we remember the prevalence of those around us who struggle with food security this holiday season.
This morning, I spent another Thanksgiving serving my community with Greater Waterbury Interfaith-Ministries. I come back every year because these folks have known me since I, myself was on the receiving end of aid. Life has taught me that to whom much is given, much is required.
Over 35,000 households across the Fifth District of Connecticut participate in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). As your Congresswoman, I am working to advance legislation to close disparities and keep children and families fed.
I am grateful for the work I have been able to accomplish as a member of the House Committee on Agriculture and as Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on Nutrition, Foreign Agriculture, and Horticulture. This Congress, I have led a number of bills in the nutrition space to:
Earlier this year, Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries established the Task Force on Agriculture and Nutrition in the 21st Century to strategize around agriculture policy and safeguard essential programs that address food security among children and older Americans like SNAP, WIC, and Meals on Wheels. For months, I worked with the Task Force to host listening sessions across the country, including the Fifth District, to gain insight into issues ranging from climate resiliency and broadband to nutrition, Ag education and everything in between to help strengthen our food system. These discussions have been critically important to ensure our Democratic priorities are included in the next Farm Bill.
As we join in fellowship and express our gratitude, we recognize there is still work to be done. I will continue leading policies that put the nation on a path toward ending hunger once and for all.
May the blessings of this day fill your heart and home.
Jahana Hayes
Member of Congress
