The Senate and House recently passed an $8.3 billion spending bill which was approved by the Trump Administration yesterday.
Although the bill could bring some needed relief and preparation, one critical piece missing from the bill highlights our need for a universal healthcare system. The bill contains no financial relief for the underinsured and uninsured who seek treatment and screening for the virus, as usual, ignoring the most financially vulnerable.
To make matters worse, the Trump Administration doubled down in a Congressional budget hearing just this week on its proposal to cut $9.5 billion in healthcare spending, including a $1.2 billion cut to the CDC and $35 million in cuts to the Infectious Diseases Rapid Response Reserve fund!
Yes, you read that right. In the midst of the coronavirus outbreak, the Administration STILL wants to gut an already strained CDC and its response units.
While the majority of Americans are fed-up with a broken healthcare system, this Administration and its Senate counterparts refuse to listen. We can no longer stand by while important healthcare agencies are gutted, and the social safety net takes a backseat to corporate profits.
Brand New Congress and our candidates understand that healthcare is a human right. Our three Senate candidates are being joined by a 4th Senate candidate this week. These fierce progressive fighters could replace four Trump-complacent Republicans, and that would be a massive step toward Medicare for All, but first, we have to get these candidates through their primaries against status-quo corporate challengers.
