John,
Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday. For me, it’s about strengthening the bonds of family — given and chosen family — and reflecting on gratitude.
I recognize that this time can stir different feelings — from the mythology behind the holiday to the difficulty of navigating political differences among family members. There will be time for those important discussions.
This is an opportunity to celebrate the bonds that unite us — whether precious memories, favorite football team, or beloved family recipe.
I reflect on my aunt and uncle (two polar opposites politically, who have both shown me great kindness and who I love very much), cheering for the family favorite Green Bay Packers (Go, Pack, Go! It’s a rebuilding year), and a green jello dish that continues through the generations (with sour cream, walnuts, cherries, and pineapple … don’t judge til you’ve tried it!).
At Thanksgiving, my family has a tradition of going around the table and everyone sharing something that we are grateful for. The reflections, from simple to profound, always deepen my sense of gratitude for the bonds that unite us and our opportunity to do good in this world.
I wanted to wish you and your loved ones a Happy Thanksgiving. Thank you for leaning into the hope that we can build for the future.
With gratitude,
Jamie
