Together, we can drive lasting change towards a just and regenerative future
Despite pockets of progress toward tackling the most pressing social and environmental issues of our times, the world remains wildly off track. As Earth passes six of its nine planetary boundaries ([link removed]) - and as COP28 rapidly approaches - it's clear we are falling short of what’s needed to deliver lasting change at scale and pace. Why?
At Forum for the Future, we believe that too many interventions – while well-intentioned – have been both shallow and piecemeal, addressing specific problems in isolation but failing to take enough collaborative action to tackle the root causes of the challenges we face.
Against this backdrop, Forum’s mission to accelerate the transition to a just and regenerative future ([link removed]) has never been more relevant – or urgent. For more than 27 years, we’ve focused on change: what it means, why it’s needed and how to do it. With a dedicated team of sustainability experts working out of the UK, US, Singapore and India, we’re focused on accelerating three potentially pivotal transitions already at play - food ([link removed]) , energy ([link removed]) and the purpose of business ([link removed]) - and bring a unique expert blend of futures ([link removed]) and systems thinking ([link removed]) .
We know that businesses, non-profits, governments, investors, civil society and others working alone cannot shift the dial. But we believe that by joining forces in new and innovative ways, we absolutely can. That’s why Forum works hand in hand with ambitious changemakers such as you.
Why not take a look at Forum’s latest insights on 2024 trends to watch in the food ([link removed]) , energy ([link removed]) and business ([link removed]) space, and get in touch (mailto:
[email protected]) to explore how we can partner together at this critical time? Whether through one-to-one business partnerships focused on your sustainability strategy, coaching programmes to equip your organisation’s leaders with the skills needed to thrive in a very different future, or by joining one of our groundbreaking cross-sector and pre-competitive coalitions, we’re here to help you on your sustainability journey.
I hope we can connect soon.

The food transition: influencing how we think about, produce, consume and value food
Examples of the climate crisis being here and now are all around us. Take New York City ([link removed]) , which felt the brunt of the sun and rain in the span of three months. India, where some rice exports have been banned ([link removed]) . Europe, where the olive harvest is one of the worst ever ([link removed]) . The list goes on.
As the world’s population continues to grow, how do we ensure we produce enough safe, nutritious and affordable food for everyone while preserving the Earth? Forum works alongside players across the food value chain to find approaches to food production that optimise health and nutritional outcomes while restoring the ecosystems and farming livelihoods on which we depend.
Working alongside leading food brands, retailers, farmers and many, many more, we’re reframing food narratives and unlocking barriers in the transition to regenerative agriculture.
Growing our Future US ([link removed]) and UK ([link removed]) , and Protein Challenge Southeast Asia ([link removed]) are just a few examples of our work in action.

The energy transition: influencing how we think about, produce, consume and value energy
It’s hard to imagine a world without energy. Yet right now, our energy system continues to rely on the burning of fossil fuels – emitting greenhouse gases that are radically destabilising our climate. What’s more, millions of people around the world are denied affordable access to sufficient and sustainable energy.
Promisingly, the world is responding. The challenge now lies in ensuring this energy transition leaves no one behind.
That's why Forum is working with players across the energy value chain on a deep and urgent transition to renewable energy that is ecologically safe and socially just. Among our programmes is the ground breaking Responsible Energy Initiative ([link removed]) in India ([link removed]) and the Philippines ([link removed]) .

The purpose of business transition
Business leadership and innovation has become critical in determining whether – even if – we will be successful in creating a better future. Yet too often, there is little guidance for businesses on where to focus. The result is often conventional ‘sustainability’ strategies that will ultimately fall short of what's needed.
Against this backdrop, some trailblazing leaders are resetting their ambition and asking a very fundamental question: what is the purpose of their business in our society and economy?
Forum’s vision is one of just and regenerative businesses looking well beyond profit to advocate for both people and planet. With a focus on inspiring visionary leadership, transforming consumption, creating an enabling context for businesses to transform, and rethinking value chains, we’re partnering with ambitious brands such as Diageo, Capgemini, Target, Dole, Royal Enfield, Mars, IDH - The Sustainable Trade Initiative, and Unilever ([link removed]) . We provide one-to-one coaching; develop issue-specific strategies and the roadmaps needed to take pragmatic action; and build capacity so that you have the right mindsets and skills in the right place to transform how you operate.

** How we work

Futures thinking...
Futures thinking is essential for preparing to lead transformations in an era of rising uncertainty and disruption. Forum harness futures ([link removed]) for just and regenerative transitions – using trends, visions and scenarios to challenge our assumptions about the world and help organisations build the capacity to build resilience while delivering on sustainability performance. We do this through specific futures inquiries, capability building programmes, and through thought leadership such as the Future of Sustainability
reports – the latest of which, Courage to Transform, ([link removed]) reveals four possible futures emerging based on how businesses are responding to today’s climate crisis.

...and system change for sustainability
Many of our fundamental systems are no longer fit for purpose. Forum uses systems approaches to understand the web of interrelations that create complex problems, anticipate unintended consequences, and identify how and where to take action. So if you are interested in bringing a systemic approach to your work, get in touch with our partner the School of System Change ([link removed]) - so we can change our systems – together.
