Hi John!

The results of yesterday’s general elections in the Netherlands were upsetting. Geert Wilders' far-right PVV gained the most seats in the Dutch parliament. A devastating result for all democrats.

However, there's a silver lining: Our member party GroenLinks, who ran in a progressive alliance with the social democrats of PvdA, secured the second most seats. In a first reaction, GroenLinks leader Jesse Klaver made clear:

“To all the people who are concerned about what this means for them: we will continue to fight for you, we stand next to you and we will continue to defend the rule of law!"

Your support is crucial now more than ever to oppose far-right ideologies and fight for both environmental and social justice. Join our mission for a greener, fairer Europe.

In other news, next week Saturday, the European Greens will hold their next Congress, which takes place online. During the Congress, we will meet all the candidates who run to become one of the two Green leading candidates—or Spitzenkandidaten—for the European Elections next year.

And lastly, some housekeeping: As you might have noticed already, we updated our newsletter design. We used your feedback from this summer’s newsletter survey to make our email updates even more interesting for you.

We hope you enjoy the new design!

Spain

Green minister in Spain’s new progressive government

We celebrate Ernest Urtasun's appointment as Spain's Minister for Culture. Urtasun, a prominent Green MEP and vice-president of the Greens/EFA group, has been a key figure in the progressive alliance Sumar, together with Labour Minister Yolanda Diaz. His appointment marks a great moment for the European Green Party and our Spanish members: Esquerra Verda, Verdes Equo, and Catalunya En Comú.

With Spain's addition, Greens now hold positions in even seven European governments, alongside Austria, Belgium, Germany, Ireland, Scotland, and Latvia. The new Spanish government, in coalition with the socialists, stands firmly against far-right influences, fighting for a progressive Spain that is inclusive and forward-thinking.

Green Leadership Council

Green Leaders prepare for EU elections

On 9 November, Green Party leaders from all over Europe met to refine their shared vision and strategise for the upcoming European elections. In a statement, EGP Co-chairs Mélanie Vogel and Thomas Waitz emphasised strong condemnation of Hamas' terrorist activities and the need for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza. They highlighted the alarming rise in antisemitism in Europe and urged democratic forces to combat hatred. The party reaffirmed support for Ukraine and committed to tackling the cost of living crisis, advocating for social justice through the green transition. Isreal

EGP welcomes the ceasefire and hostage-release deal

Mélanie Vogel and Thomas Waitz, co-chairs of the European Green Party, comment ([link removed] ) : “We welcome the announcement of an agreement to release hostages and to respect a 4 days truce in Gaza. In order to relieve the immense suffering caused by the current conflict, and to break the cycle of violence, this must be the first step towards the unconditional release of all the hostages, a permanent ceasefire, the uninterrupted flow of humanitarian aid to Gaza and the relaunch of a peace process towards a two-state solution". The European Green Party demands that the European Union and the international community redouble their efforts to play a diplomatic role to ensure that all international laws are respected. The European Greens stand for a lasting end to violence in Israel and Palestine.

European Elections

European Greens meet with civil society

The European Greens have always worked closely together with civil society groups, and the 2024 European Election is no exception. Earlier this month, we met with representatives from NGO’s, trade unions, advocacy organisations, green businesses and other civil society groups to discuss our Green election manifesto. We’ve listened, learned and shared our ideas on the future of Europe. Thanks for everyone who contributed to this inclusive process!

EU Enlargement

“The European Union must deliver on its promises”

"We are in favour of the enlargement of the European Union. The European Commission must also do more to help the candidate countries build up their democratic capacities," European Green co-chairs Mélanie Vogel and Thomas Waitz said, reacting to the European Commission’s recommendation on EU enlargement. “And don’t forget the Western Balkans: it is our historical responsibility, as well as a geopolitical strategic necessity, to support integration, democratisation and reconciliation in the Western Balkans”.
