In 1789, George Washington named the fourth Thursday in November a national day of thanks and urged the nation to give the Lord a "sincere and humble thanks" for our independence and new governance.

We have appreciated the gifts bestowed upon us every November since, and as we enter the holiday season, I encourage each of us to express gratitude for our many blessings.

Let us also remember our military members and public safety officers who may not be able to gather with their families this year. We are fortunate to be afforded our freedoms and the comfort of living in this great nation. May we never take for granted their sacrifice and dedication to help ensure a safe holiday season.

From my family to yours, I wish you a very Happy Thanksgiving.
