On Labor Day weekend, 35 excited guests arrived at a campground in Newark, Ohio, for a retreat dedicated to “fat joy”—a place where people could swim, dance, do yoga, roast marshmallows, and sleep in cabins with others who had been made to feel guilty about their weight. The point of Camp RoundUp was “really diving into the joy of being at summer camp, the joy of being a fat little kid again,” Alison Rampa, one of the organizers, told me.

She and a friend, Erica Chiseck, had created Camp RoundUp to counter the shame and stigma that fat Americans report experiencing because of their size. They wanted to establish somewhere that “ladies and theydies” could feel comfortable in shorts or a swimsuit, with no awkwardness in the lunch line over portion sizes or second helpings.

But even somewhere as body-positive as Camp RoundUp couldn’t avoid a subject that has captivated the American media and divided couples, communities, and friendship groups. At a session called “Compassionate Conversations,” someone eventually said the word: Ozempic—the best-known name in a class of new weight-loss drugs.

Generative AI is the major turning point in skills-first hiring, says former IBM CEO Ginni Rometty - Fortune   

Every great idea has its moment. Really great ideas—like hiring on the basis of skills rather than pedigree—might have two. 

That’s what Ginni Rometty, former CEO of tech giant IBM and current chairman of upskilling initiative OneTen, told Fortune last week. Rometty, aside from being IBM’s first female CEO and a top-10 fixture on Fortune’s annual Most Powerful Women list, might be best-known for driving IBM toward a hiring plan that prioritizes skill level ahead of college education or job experience. 

A decade ago, Rometty launched what she called the SkillsFirst initiative at IBM: an “overhaul [of] its hiring practices to create on-ramps for people who were previously overlooked—and to build a pipeline of capable non-degreed workers.” At the time, she referred to these jobs as “new-collar jobs.” Today she thinks they’re better described as skills-first—and they’ve never been more front and center. That’s due to many factors, but chief among them are the increasing unaffordability of college, a volatile job market that often left companies scrambling to fill open roles, and a pandemic that gave both workers and executives alike a chance to sit and reconsider their primary needs.

If that sounds familiar, you'll likely be interested in a new study from the NYU Grossman School of Medicine that found a correlation between a specific but common type of diet during middle age, and a remarkable 17 percent better memory outcomes decades later.

Writing in the journal Alzheimer's & Dementia, researchers said they tracked data related to 5,116 women in the NYU Women's Health Study over 30 years, focusing on answers the women provided about their diets between 1985 and 1991.

In March 2020, while Covid lockdowns were in full swing and small businesses' sales had fallen off a cliff, Jackie Reses called Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin. As the head of Square Capital, the lending arm of Jack Dorsey's payment processing company Square, Reses insisted that even though her company wasn't a traditional bank, Mnuchin should make an exception and let Square help dole out the hundreds of billions of dollars in forgivable loans that the U.S. government had made available through the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP). She argued that Square's relationships with millions of small businesses made it a good distribution channel.

After Mnuchin agreed to allow Square, Intuit, PayPal and other fintechs to become PPP lenders, Reses turned to her team and said, "We have three weeks to build a brand-new loan program from scratch, and it has to be mostly automated." The 100-plus employees slated to work on it were exhilarated. "If we typed fast enough, these businesses could get saved. They wouldn't lose their lease, they could make payroll," says Audrey Kim, who worked under Reses as the head of product at Square Capital at the time.

"I felt so energized by the mission that I barely slept for the first four months of PPP," Reses says. "I saw such an extreme level of need and fear across main street businesses in the United States, and I felt if we didn't help them, they would largely go out of business, and local neighborhoods would deeply suffer. I felt that viscerally in my heart and my head, and it impacted every decision I made in that period of time."
