Actions for Karen: Two Turkeys Saved, Articles Published and More! 22 November 2023 Actions for Karen: Two Turkeys Saved, Articles Published and More! Email from John Di Leonardo to UPC, Nov. 21, 2023: Hello, I am writing to offer my condolences for the tremendous loss of Karen Davis as well as to let you know about some actions my organization Humane Long Island has been performing in her honor. We just rescued two turkeys from a live slaughter market and named them Karen and Davie after Karen Davis. They've both had the ends of their toes and beaks severed and have bumblefoot and extensive feather loss. One is lame and the other has open wounds from cannibalism along the entirety of her back. We have a vet appointment for them today. We tagged UPC in a post about them here. North Fork Patch already did a wonderful story about them with quotes about the horrors of the animal farming industry and telling readers to go vegan to save 200 animals annually. My organization also got a Newsday cover story about turkeys published on Friday. It was a full two pages, a partial main cover, and the full cover of the real estate section. It included this picture of me and my wife Juliana holding a "Stop Eating Animals" sign as well. We additionally published an article about Karen Davis in The South Asian Times last week with an excerpt about chickens from your website and one about not eating turkeys in The South Asian Times and ALotusInTheMud.com this week. Here are some pictures from a chick'n giveaway we did in Williamsburg in Karen's honor last week outside of Satmar Meats in a neighborhood where Karen had sponsored the rescue of so many chickens used for Kaporos. This giveaway was generously sponsored by Ingrid Newkirk of PETA. We also did a giveaway with NYC Council Member Justin Brannan yesterday. He posted about it here and we received great coverage on WCBS 880 and Hofstra University Radio. We're planning to give away more Tofurkys on Long Island tonight and tomorrow ahead of the holiday and planning to rescue more turkeys and hopefully some chickens as well.
