Happy Abortion Provider Appreciation Day, everybody!

While the Abortion Access Front squad and I celebrate abortion providers every damn day, March 10th brings our entire movement together to lift up clinics and publicly recognize just how critical they are to our commmunities. And while today is full of festivities, it’s also a day of mourning and remembrance for those who have lost their lives to anti-abortion violence. It actually started to honor the life of Dr. David Gunn, an abortion provider who was murdered by an extremist on this day in 1993. Since then, there have been 10 more murders and 26 attempted murders due to anti-abortion violence, and clinic workers continue to face harrassement and threats in today’s toxic climate.

So today is ALSO a day to take ACTION! If you didn’t catch the news among all the current events of the past couple of weeks, abortion providers are facing the biggest threat to their existence in several years. Four years, to be exact. Last Wednesday, the Supreme Court heard oral arguments in a case from Louisiana about a TRAP law that is IDENTICAL to the one from Texas that they struck down in 2016. With the new rapey makeup of the Supreme Court, it’s hard to know whether precedent (and basic facts, science, and respect for humanity) will be upheld. Check out my piece in Refinery 29 that breaks down the case and just what’s at stake this time around.

At the rally in front of the Supreme Court during oral arguments for June Medical Services v. Russo, we had our Preaux Abortion signs to celebrate Hope Medical Group for Women, the Louisiana clinic at the center of the case.

Abortion provider Amy Hagstrom Miller (left), who won Whole Woman's Health v. Hellerstedt in 2016, decompresses at our rally after party with Kathaleen Pittman of the Hope Medical Group for Women.

Needless to say, we were out there at SCOTUS making NOISE last week along with a bus full of volunteers we brought from NYC and our friends at the Pinkhouse Defenders, Feminist Flag Corps, and Capital Care Clinic Escorts in Ohio! Couldn’t make it? No sweat! Here’s what YOU can do right now to make your voice heard and celebrate the providers in your community and beyond:

Let’s hear it one more time for providers!
