A vehicle exploded on Wednesday at the Rainbow Bridge border crossing near Niagara Falls, prompting an investigation by the FBI into what is now considered an attempted terrorist attack.

As reported by Fox News, the car, loaded with explosives, was traveling from the United States into Canada. The explosion resulted in the death of two individuals in the vehicle, while a border officer sustained injuries.

The impact of the blast was substantial, leading to the closure of all nearby bridges and the evacuation of government buildings. This caused significant disruptions at one of the busiest border crossings between the U.S. and Canada. Among those injured was a 27-year-old male, taken to Niagara Falls Memorial Hospital. Fortunately, his injuries, including back pain and minor cuts, were not life-threatening.

The incident is expected to have implications for the border protocols under President Biden.

The FBI released a statement saying, “The FBI Buffalo Field Office is investigating a vehicle explosion at the Rainbow Bridge, a border crossing between the US and Canada in Niagara Falls. The FBI is coordinating with our local, state, and federal law enforcement partners in this investigation. As this situation is very fluid, that’s all we can say at this time.”

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul commented, “At my direction, the New York State Police is actively working with the FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force to monitor all points of entry to New York. I am traveling to Buffalo to meet with law enforcement and emergency responders and will update New Yorkers when more information becomes available.”
