NOTES FROM THE FIELD | 2023 | No.10

Saving for the Future

When biodiversity is lost, is it really gone forever? Maybe not. Here
in San Diego, we recently banked our 11,000th cryopreserved living
cell sample

, this one from a critically endangered blue-eyed black lemur. These
vials of hope-along with millions of plant seeds, vast
collections of plasma and tissues, and so much more-are safely
tucked away, promising a future for vulnerable species across the
globe.

, to samples that could help boost critically endangered populations,
biobanks like ours are opening the door to new ways of saving species.
And, they're becoming key to informing wildlife care and
conservation decisions.

With the largest and oldest repository of its kind, we're
leading the way on biobanking. We're honored to announce a new
partnership with the International Union for Conservation of Nature
(IUCN) to form the Center for Species Survival: Biodiversity Banking
