Friend,
As a first-generation Iranian American immigrant who fled from violent extremism in childhood, I distinctly remember my family's first Thanksgiving in America.
We set the table in our safe new home, surrounded by the smells of our delicious homecooked meal, the sound of laughter, and the feeling of warmth. A world of difference from the sounds of gunfire, the smell of gunpowder, and the sense of fear that we had been used to.
We were so grateful to be here in this land of sunshine, delicious food and kind neighbors. We embraced California living and the new American holidays that brought us together. Thanksgiving was filled with joy, singing, dancing and the memories fill my heart each November.
This year, as I am surrounded once again by my family, friends, and cuddly fur babies, I wanted to thank you and share my appreciation for your continued support as our people-powered movement grows and gains momentum by the day. While I am grateful for my blessings, I am conscious that this is a difficult time for far too many Angelenos who don’t have food or housing security. I will continue to create and support policies that ensure all of us have the safety and security that we all are entitled to throughout our district and our country.
Friend, the goal of our movement is to ensure everyone can experience safety, comfort, and security — a roof over their heads and enough to eat not just during Thanksgiving but every single day. That's why we're in this race.
As we stand together with perseverance and unity, we will make it to Congress, where we will fight for the rights and dignity of the underrepresented and ignored — and pave a brighter future for all.
Wishing you and your loved ones a Happy Thanksgiving.
With gratitude,
Mayor Sepi Shyne
