Welcome New Troopers!
144th TRS on Capitol Steps

Join us in welcoming our 61 newest Michigan State Troopers who graduated from the 144th Trooper Recruit School on November 22!

Recruits received training in patrol techniques, report writing, ethics, cultural diversity and implicit bias, decision making, leadership, first aid, criminal law, crime scene processing, firearms, water safety, defensive tactics and precision driving.

Prepare Now for Winter Hazards

As winter approaches, it's time to ensure we are prepared for the colder months ahead. Here are some quick tips to keep you and your loved ones safe and snug this winter:

* Stock an emergency preparedness kit in your home with water, non-perishable food, medication, flashlights, first aid kit, pet supplies, important documents and extra clothes and blankets.
* Clean your home’s gutters to prevent ice dams from forming. Roof ice dams can cause water build-up leading to interior damage.
* Winterize your home by installing weather-stripping around windows and doors and by insulating walls, attics and basements.
* Install battery-operated carbon monoxide detectors near every sleeping area.
* Keep your vehicle’s gas tank at least half full at all times during the winter to avoid fuel lines freezing up and getting ice buildup in your tank.
* Check your vehicle’s tire pressure, make sure you have an ice scrapper handy and refill your windshield washer fluid reservoir.

Beware of Imposter Scams Targeting the Elderly and Disabled

Recent reports of an increase in government imposter fraud targeting seniors and people with disabilities [ [link removed] ] has led Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel to reiterate her warnings about scam phone calls and re-issue tips seniors can use to protect themselves.

Remember that no government agency will ever:

* Call out of the blue and ask for a Social Security number.
* Ask for payment by gift card, bitcoin or other digital currency or wire transfer; or
* Threaten to suspend anyone’s Social Security number -- this cannot be done.

If you receive a suspicious call, consider these tips:

* End a call right away if you have any suspicions about the caller.
* Never provide your Social Security number, bank account information or Medicare number to someone who phones, messages or emails you unsolicited.
* Never use a gift card or wire transfer to make payment to someone you do not know.
* Never open email attachments or links unless you know the sender.
* Join the National Do Not Call Registry by visiting DoNotCall.gov or by calling 1-888-382-1222 (TTY: 1-866-290-4236) from the phone you want to register.

If you think you have been a victim of an imposter scam, you can file a consumer complaint [ [link removed] ].
