Builders on the Amwala Ki Rao, a tributary to the Mid Upper Yamuna in India, are trying to industrialize the river. Mid Upper Yamuna Riverkeeper Minakshi Arora has been waging a long fight to stop them from destroying this essential tributary.
After three years in court, in September, the court ruled in Qiantang River Waterkeeper’s favor over pollution. The tanneries’ parent companies were fined a total of almost 30 million Renminbi (about $4.3 million).
A huge network of volunteer water quality monitors already exists, but individual efforts are not yet connected. The Water Data Collaborative will use cutting edge data tech to streamline the processes of collecting, uploading, and sharing data.
