"This is a huge win for Montana, for youth, for democracy and for our climate,” said Julia Olson, the executive director of Our Children’s Trust, which brought Held v. Montana. “More rulings like this will certainly come."
Our Children’s Trust created the rights-based youth climate movement in 2010. In the climate emergency, courts have the power to help us reverse course, to hold governments accountable, and to listen to children who take the stand to tell their stories of how the climate crisis impacts their lives. And the court listened. And the youth won.
1972 Montana voters established right to a clean and healthful environment. Mae Nan Ellingson at 24 was the youngest delegate in the Constitutional Convention and told her story in the courtroom.
2020 Worst fire season in 2,000 years in Montana when kids started their climate case and it is expected to get worse
16 Montana youth (ages 9 to 22) powered forward together in court and the world listened.
