Coronavirus (COVID-19) is causing a global health emergency.
As we all work together to mitigate the risk of this virus spreading -- including by encouraging employees to stay home if they are feeling sick -- we must consider the economic impact that has on working families.
That’s why I am calling on Congress to pass legislation I have cosponsored to ensure American workers receive paid sick leave in the event of public health emergencies like the COVID-19 epidemic.
Many federal workers, including U.S. legislators, receive paid sick leave. But the tens of millions of American workers who work paycheck to paycheck do not. For most, taking unpaid sick leave means not being able to afford the basics like rent and health care.
In times of crisis, we cannot force working people to choose between their paycheck and spreading their illness to others and exacerbating the problem. We need paid sick leave.
