Legislative Update

*Thankful for our Veterans and the Good Work at the Capitol *

To start I would like to recognize all of my fellow veterans. This past Saturday was Veterans Day, a great day to be thankful for the sacrifices our veterans have made to protect our freedoms. Missed holidays and time away from family to be deployed or on duty is a challenge the service members and their families continue to face throughout their careers. Thank You for your dedication to our great nation.

It's common for those of us at the Capitol to fixate on the negatives and problems we encounter. Too often at the Capitol, we are caught in the trap of always focusing in on what is wrong and all the problems we see but in the spirit of Thanksgiving let?s look at some of the legislation to be thankful for this year.

The first is a bill that I am proud to be the chief author of and get passed with bipartisan support. House File 2175 is a consumer protection bill for non-bank mortgage providers to bring their protections and reporting requirements in line with conventional lenders. As an uncertain economy approaches we should provide the best possible environment for home buyers and this legislation is a crucial piece of that work. Homeownership is a major cornerstone of building families and communities that we should encourage and make more accessible.

Nursing home funding was another major issue we faced this year which I?m thankful to have found a solution for. In the final hours of this year?s legislative session, the House Republican Caucus managed to secure $300 million in funding to keep nursing homes across the state afloat as rising costs and delays in the reimbursement formula have put many care centers on the verge of closure. This includes over $1.3 million in funding right here in District 22B. With more than 1.3 million residents aged 65 and older across the state, the need for this level of care will continue to grow and this funding will help ensure that this important resource is available to those who need it.

The Veterans and Military Affairs Bill was another success for our caucus. This legislation expanded the support Minnesota veterans receive. The bill also includes a 50% increase in the amount of tuition assistance available as part of the Veterans GI Bill. It is important for us to support our veterans who have made great sacrifices to protect our freedoms and way of life.

As we approach Thanksgiving, let us take a moment to reflect on the things that we are thankful for, including the sacrifices of our veterans, the important legislative work that has been accomplished, and the people in our lives who mean the most to us. For me, there is nothing more important than family. I hope you all get to celebrate this holiday with your families and loved ones, enjoying the warmth of their company, and the abundance of the season. Happy Thanksgiving!
