Let’s tell the PM not to break his climate promise.

Dear John

To help keep global heating below 1.5C the UK must reduce emissions by over two-thirds by 2030. But the UK is way off track to achieving its target.

Next week I’m going to the COP28 international climate talks, and I’ll be delivering an open letter to Rishi Sunak.

The letter reminds him of his promise to hit the 2030 target – made at last year’s COP27. And demands a new climate plan showing exactly how the UK will reduce emissions by 2030. If you haven’t already, please make this letter more powerful by signing your name.

Countries that have done the least to cause the climate crisis are feeling the worst of its impacts.

But earlier this year Mr Sunak looked set to cut the UK’s £11.6 billion pledge to help countries vulnerable to climate breakdown.

Thanks to thousands of us speaking up together, we pressured the PM to keep this pledge and it worked.

This story doesn’t have a perfect ending. Since then the government has fiddled some of the rules about the funding [1]. So countries in need won’t get as much help as originally implied by the government. But we helped stop it being slashed even further.

Now it's time to speak up again. Let’s tell the prime minister to create a new plan to meet the UK’s 2030 target to cut emissions by over two thirds. Please make sure you sign your name before I deliver the letter to the PM at COP28.

Tackling the climate crisis gets more urgent every year. Together, with your help, we can demand bolder action from our leaders.

Thanks for all your support.

Best wishes,

Rachel
