We know we need to secure the total phase out of fossil fuels and transition to clean, sustainable energy. But for lower income countries there’s one big thing standing in their way: unpayable debts.
Fifty-four countries are in debt crisis – cancelling their debts will support efforts towards climate justice. It will mean countries are no longer forced to exploit fossil fuels to meet debt repayments. It will allow them to prepare for climate disasters, and to recover when hurricanes, floods and wildfires hit.
World leaders, ministers and officials will be meeting at the climate summit to discuss how to respond to the climate crisis. It’s a big opportunity for activists around the world to join forces to demand debt cancellation.
