Dear John,
A ceasefire has been reached, but it is only temporary and must be made permanent.
According to initial reports, 50 hostages taken by Hamas on October 7th – including 30 children – will be released; in return, Israel will halt its bombing of Gaza for four days, release 140 imprisoned Palestinian women and children, and allow 300 aid trucks into Gaza each day of the ceasefire.
To be clear, this is not everything that many of us had hoped for. But it will save innocent lives and is a serious step in the right direction that wouldn’t have been possible without all of the work the peace movement has done to call for an immediate ceasefire and put pressure on policymakers to deliver.
Now, we must make the most of this. Those committed to warfare, regardless of the costs, will work to ensure that this is just a temporary pause in the fighting.
They may well succeed. The choice before the world in the days to come is between a resumption of war and more death and destruction that risks expanding beyond the borders of Israel and Palestine and engulfing the entire region, or the beginning of the end of war. We must choose the road that leads to peace.
That’s why we need to redouble our efforts to secure a full ceasefire, and call on our lawmakers - including those who haven’t been able to do so yet - to welcome this important step and urge that it be expanded into a broader peace.
