A new report shows that the floating ice platforms of Northern Greenland are in stark decline. As these ice shelves melt, sea levels are rising. Greenland now only has five large ice shelves remaining.
Northern Greenland’s floating ice shelves act like the stopper of a decanter, and without them, nothing is stopping glaciers from floating into the sea and contributing to serious sea-level rise. Since 1978, these ice shelves have already lost 35 percent of their overall volume — that’s equivalent to a loss of 400 billion tons of floating ice.
