Wisconsin’s Legislative Maps Are Before the State Supreme Court ([link removed])

By Paige Anderholm

Here are some recent updates.
* A federal judge struck down ([link removed]) Pennsylvania's policy of rejecting mail-in ballots simply because the outer envelopes are missing a correct handwritten date from voters. Over 7,600 ballots were rejected ([link removed]) in 2022 because of the rule.
* The Wisconsin Supreme Court held ([link removed]) oral argument in a lawsuit to determine if the state Assembly and Senate maps need to be redrawn ahead of 2024. Read more about what happened here ([link removed]) .
* A new brief submitted ([link removed]) in the U.S. 5th Circuit Court of Appeals by Republican attorneys general from Texas and Mississippi reveals how Republicans are brazenly weaponizing procedure in an attempt to undo pro-democracy decisions from the Circuit’s less conservative members.
* Voters appealed ([link removed]) last week’s decision to keep former President Donald Trump on the 2024 Colorado ballot to the state’s Supreme Court. Trump also appealed the ruling, arguing that the court made "multiple grave jurisdictional and legal errors" even though it allowed him to remain on the state's primary ballot.
* The Missouri Supreme Court rejected ([link removed]) Secretary of State Jay Ashcroft's (R) appeal of a decision blocking his “politically partisan” reproductive rights ballot initiative language. The new court-written language will still be used.
* After Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D) repealed a state law that made it a crime to hire transportation to bring voters to the polls, Michigan groups voluntarily dismissed ([link removed]) their lawsuit challenging the 1891 statute.

8th Circuit Rules Private Plaintiffs Cannot Sue Under Section 2 of Voting Rights Act ([link removed])

By Madeleine Greenberg

Here’s what to expect coming up.
* Tomorrow, there is a hearing regarding Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin’s (R) motion to dismiss a federal lawsuit ([link removed]) challenging a provision of the Virginia Constitution that imposes a lifetime ban on voting for those with felony convictions.
* A federal district court will hold ([link removed]) a status conference on Nov. 27 on the next steps in litigation over Louisiana's congressional map. Republican lawmakers have said they likely won't meet to draw a new map before a court-ordered optional deadline.
