I’m sure you have heard by now that the Supreme Court adopted their first ever ethics code. And it’s a joke. This may look good at first glance, but it has absolutely no teeth and has no consequences for the Justices who have already engaged in egregiously unethical behavior.
When Clarence Thomas faces no consequences for jet-setting across the world on a conservative billionaire megadonor’s dime, we know it’s a sham attempt at ethics.
Can you chip in $25 to support our work as we fight for an ethics standard so that the Court remains an independent entity free of influence from partisan politics and the super-wealthy?
This new ethics code does not lay out any enforcement mechanism for ensuring rules are followed, what the consequences for engaging in unethical behavior will be, or who is in charge of monitoring the Court’s behavior. This is NOT enough with the Court’s horrible track record of having travel paid for by mega-donors, accepting undisclosed gifts, and buddying up with conservative billionaires like the Koch brothers.
