The Education Visualization and Analytics Solution (EVAAS) from SAS is a web-based reporting system available to all districts and schools in Michigan. EVAAS can be an essential tool to support MICIP by using available student assessment data to identify areas of assets and target areas of need to drive the continuous improvement process.
EVAAS also provides student projections at the group and individual student level. These projections indicate how a student is likely to score on an upcoming assessment if the student makes typical progress. These projections assist educators in setting differentiated goals for students based on individual needs and assist with advanced course recommendations and identification of students who may benefit from additional academic support.
Michigan districts and schools have access to EVAAS reports at mi.sas.com. EVAAS reporting has been available in Michigan since 2018, and access to high-quality student growth measures and projections are just a few clicks away. Reimbursements Available for Certification Application Fees
As part of Michigan’s ongoing strategic effort to reward, incentivize, and retain educators, the Michigan Department of Education (MDE) has launched a Certificate Application Fee Reimbursement program. The Certificate Application Fee Reimbursement program has been designed to retain and incentivize educators who are renewing their certification for the first time and anyone adding additional teaching endorsements between October 1, 2023 and September 13, 2024. There is no need to apply for this reimbursement, since eligible reimbursements will be automatically processed. Daily Substitute Teaching Permit Extensions Provide Additional Staffing Flexibilities!
In this time of teacher shortage, a reminder memo went out via MDE’s standard Thursday communications on 10/19/2023 regarding Daily Substitute Permit use and available extensions. Although a Daily Substitute Permit is designed for intermittent assignments, two permit extensions are available under current state Administrative Rule (R 390.1143 (2) (e)). Working under a Full-Year Basic Permit or have a staff member who is?
The State Superintendent has granted a statewide waiver that offers flexibility in what “progress towards certification” may look like for an individual working under a Full-Year Basic Permit (FYBP). While the FYBP first renewal requires enrollment in a preparation program, what progress towards certification looks like for the 2nd and 3rd renewals (total of 4 years) can be determined locally. Elementary (ZG) & World Language (FA-FS) Staffing Flexibilities
A November 2nd memo announced additional staffing flexibilities during this time of teacher shortage. Elementary ZG endorsed teachers can help staff middle school departmentalized classrooms AND an expansion of all world language endorsements is now available.

PAEMST (Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching)
The 2023-24 PAEMST application cycle is NOW OPEN! Outstanding K-6th grade educators working in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics can be nominated/apply on the PAEMST webpage. Nominations close on January 8, 2024. Applications must be completed by February 6, 2024.
Established by Congress in 1983, the PAEMST award is the highest honor bestowed by the United States government specifically for K-12 science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and/or computer science teaching. Learn more by visiting the PAEMST webpage.
Six Michigan educators were named as finalists for the 2022-23 PAESMT award! Winners will be announced in early 2024.

Legislative Change to Reporting State Employment Data
As a reminder, a memo was released in October about the amendments to Michigan Compiled Law 388.1619 requiring districts to update their rosters in the Registry of Educational Personnel within 30 days of a hire, termination, or major change to assignment. This is in support of school safety legislation and shortage initiatives.

MICHIGAN TALENT POOL
The Michigan Talent Pool is a group of elementary and secondary educators nominated by their supervisors that the Michigan Department of Education draws upon throughout the year when opportunities for engagement and recognition become available.
For 2023, the Michigan Department of Education is focusing on early and mid-career educational leaders primarily working with students in grades 6 to 12.
We welcome recommendations of outstanding classroom teachers and/or principals who exhibit strong potential for professional leadership, and demonstrate the following:
- Exceptional educational talent as evidenced by effective instructional practices and student learning results in the classroom and school;
- Exemplary educational accomplishments beyond the classroom;
- Contributions to education that are largely unheralded, yet are worthy of the spotlight; and
- An engaging and inspiring presence that motivates and impacts students, colleagues and the community.
Recommendations to the Talent Pool should be submitted by the nominee's supervisor and can be made via the online recommendation form.
The nomination form includes a one-page letter of recommendation explaining how the nominee meets the above criteria. Please note that these recommendations are confidential and should not be discussed with the recommended educator or others in your school or community.

EDUCATION WORKFORCE REPORT
The Michigan Alliance for Student Opportunity (The Alliance), a group of member school districts that serve students with the greatest educational needs, in collaboration with Public Policy Associates, and researchers from Michigan State University and the University of Michigan, unveiled a new report recently that examines the state of Michigan’s education workforce and the challenges Michigan faces with K-12 staffing.
