Hi John,
On Friday we handed in our 120,000-strong petition to No. 10 Downing Street demanding the UK leave the Energy Charter Treaty, on the eve of a crucial meeting of its member countries.

Yesterday, a vote on ‘modernisation’ of the treaty was yet again taken off the table at the meeting, bringing the UK up to its own deadline to act on this deal that lets fossil fuel companies sue governments over climate action.
So many countries have decided to exit the pact, because of the weakness of the reforms, that EU members of the treaty cannot find common ground to vote the proposals through, and got them taken off the agenda.

With reform of the Energy Charter Treaty failing for the third time, we are left exactly where we were a year ago – only this time the UK government is out of its own time and excuses: the UK gave itself a November deadline to consider exiting the ECT if modernisation wasn’t agreed. (1)

We cannot let them shy away from their own commitments: we’re ready to mobilise if we’re met with silence at this critical moment. With COP28 just around the corner, the government must announce the UK’s exit with no further delay.

This is the moment to shore up our ability to meet our climate obligations to people at home and across the world, while protecting the public’s pocket from polluter pay-outs.

In solidarity,
Cleodie Rickard
