Over the past few weeks, my team and I continued to meet with members of our community here in Washington, and in South Texas.
Last week, I was proud to vote in favor of a continuing resolution to keep the federal government funded until 2024. The fact is, we narrowly avoided a government shutdown — again. House Republicans cannot continue to hold the American people hostage for the sake of a political agenda. By voting yes, we ensured that our military personnel and critical government employees are paid through the holidays. Read my full statement here.
On Tuesday, November 14th, I was proud to commemorate World Diabetes Day to bring awareness about the thousands of South Texans living with this disease. During my time in Congress, I have fought to increase access to health care, lower drug costs, and bring attention to the negative impacts of diabetes. Rest assured, I will continue to fight each and every day for everyone in South Texas who is impacted by this disease.
Last year, I voted for the Inflation Reduction Act which allows those on Medicare Part D to pay only $35 a month for insulin and allows the President to negotiate the price of 10 prescription drugs. Of that 10, four medications that treat diabetes are in the process of being negotiated on; Jardiance, Januvia, Farxiga, & NovoLog/Fiasp.
On November 8, 2023, I introduced H.R. 6304, the bipartisan Increased Cost of Compliance Modernization Act which expands coverage for Americans in high-flood risk areas like ours. My bipartisan bill will provide greater peace of mind and economic relief to folks who have already suffered through a natural disaster, so they don’t have to worry about the roof over their head when another storm hits.
I also welcomed students from Boys & Girls Clubs in the Rio Grande Valley. Last year, I was able to secure $1,753,811 to upgrade the Boys & Girls Club of Pharr-San Juan. I was happy to meet with them and hear how this funding has positively impacted the Boys & Girls Club, and what I can do to continue supporting their mission to build strong foundations for our South Texas youth.
One of the most important parts of serving as your Congressman is making sure that federal agencies are working with you and for you. Whether you are having issues with passports, USCIS, OPM, the VA, or the IRS, my staff is here to assist you.
Should you have questions or need assistance with a federal agency, please call my office at (956) 682-5545 or submit a request online here to speak with someone on my team.
Earlier this month, I was proud to have one of our fall interns graduate from the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute!
Interested in being an intern for the Spring semester? My offices offer internships in both Washington, D.C. and South Texas!
Interns learn about the legislative process, the many functions of a Congressional Office, and get the chance to assist with various constituent casework or work on District-based projects. If you would like more information on Congressional Internships, please contact my office, or check out my website here! My offices are currently accepting applications until December 1st!
I want to thank everyone who came out during our San Benito Neighborhood Hours! Our next stops will be Los Fresnos, Port Isabel, and La Feria. Stay tuned for updates and let us know if you would like us visit a neighborhood near you!
Please look at this testimonial from Roberto, who my office assisted in their IRS issue!
