** Welcome to my Winter 2023 newsletter
------------------------------------------------------------

It has been an exceptionally busy couple of months, with one of the highlights being the opening of the new phase of Ashford College. The town and its young people now have a top-rate training centre for engineering, robotics, plumbing and construction. Getting support from central Government was key to the College achieving its aims, and I was delighted to help organise this. It is always an honour to take part in the Service of Remembrance, and at a dark time for the world the attendance of those who wanted to honour our troops was higher than ever. I have enjoyed a number of visits to local firms, including Brakes, as well as schools in the area. In the House of Commons I set up a debate on the future of Eurostar services, asking the Rail Minister to help persuade Eurostar to reopen Ashford station. I hope you enjoy a peaceful Christmas.

** Thank you to my Social Care supporters!
------------------------------------------------------------

Thank you to everyone who joined my Social Care Campaign. For decades Government’s have promised that they will solve the social care crisis, but in reality not enough has changed. I have now delivered the open letter to the Prime Minister. What’s clear is that 100s of people up and down the country agree that social care deserves permanent investment and changes to policies that will make it better. I hope to receive a response from the Prime Minister soon.

** Ashford Remembers
------------------------------------------------------------

It was an honour to lay a wreath at the Memorial Gardens in Ashford on Remembrance Day as we remember those who bravely defended our freedoms and protected our way of life. I also planted a cross for Ashford at the Constituency Garden of Remembrance in Parliament.

** Breast Cancer Now
------------------------------------------------------------

55,000 women and 400 men are diagnosed with breast cancer every year in the UK. I’m proud to be supporting Breast Cancer Now.

** Chamber of Commerce
------------------------------------------------------------

It’s always great speaking to the Kent Invicta Chamber of Commerce. A lively discussion with successful businesses from across Kent.

** Ashford College
------------------------------------------------------------

It was a pleasure to open Ashford College’s new Phase 2 extension. The new build includes a cutting-edge ‘Engineering Hub’ as well as new electrical, plumbing and digital facilities.

** Abbie’s Army
------------------------------------------------------------

I presented an award to Amanda and Ray Mifsud, who set up the Ashford-based charity “Abbie’s Army” in 2012 after they lost their 6 year old daughter to a rare brain cancer.

** What’s happening in Parliament?
------------------------------------------------------------

There has been a lot of activity in Parliament in the run up to Christmas. I held a debate on International Rail Services from Kent and urged the Government to support getting Eurostar services back to Ashford. I have been working with Kent County Council and Ashford Borough Council to get these services back and I believe that issues of financial viability for Eurostar and problems with border checks can be solved with determination and goodwill on all sides.

Earlier this month, the King opened the new session of Parliament with the King’s Speech. In the speech he outlined the Government’s programme of legislation for the Parliamentary session. The range of legislation includes bills on crime and justice, policing, housing, the environment, and technology. These new laws will set the country on the right path for the long-term to safeguard the future prosperity of the UK, seize economic opportunities and deliver a brighter future. The next big event in the calendar is the Autumn Statement where the Chancellor will update MPs on the state of the economy and potentially announce any tax and spending decisions.

In the Culture, Media and Sport Select Committee we recently published reports on our Football Governance inquiry and NFTs and the Blockchain inquiry. The committee is currently holding evidence sessions on a range of inquiries from women’s sport to gambling regulation and safety at major sporting events.
