Dear John,

Fifty years into our nation’s failed experiment with mass incarceration, the evidence is clear. Study after study has shown that lengthy prison sentences do not effectively deter crime.

Yet that’s not what frenzy-feeding politicians and clickbait media want you to think.

They know they can stoke people’s fears about crime, turning communities against one another instead of making our communities safer and stronger.

John, stand with us now, as we strive to empower people with the information needed to reject empty rhetoric and demand policies that work. Support facts over fears by pledging a gift to The Sentencing Project this #GivingTuesday. 

I pledge to stand up for the truth about how to make our communities safer — and stand against false, fear-mongering rhetoric that perpetuates racial injustice and an overreliance on incarceration.

I commit to fighting falsehoods with fact — encouraging nuanced discussions that address the root causes of criminal behavior, respect human dignity, and honor the capacity of people for change.

I pledge to hold politicians and the media accountable for their empty rhetoric and demand they do better. I join my voice with others across the nation calling for innovative, research-based policies that empower communities and keep them safe.
