John,
Congress stayed busy in the month before their summer recess.
From foreign policy and tensions with Iran to veterans’ health care and the VA MISSION Act, there was plenty for CVA to keep you up to date on.
Check out the top four stories from July:
The Senate missed an opportunity by voting down an amendment that would have reasserted Congress’ constitutional war powers. Sen. Tom Udall’s amendment would have required Congress to authorize use of force against Iran as tensions continue to mount.
Thankfully, members of the House are also working to take back responsibilities over war and peace. CVA Senior Advisor Dan Caldwell wrote an op-ed commending steps by Reps. Ro Khanna and Matt Gaetz to require congressional authorization before any use of force against Iran.
As the federal budget made its way through the House last month, leadership called for a massive increase in the Department of Veterans Affairs' budget to fund the VA MISSION Act. Caldwell wrote in an op-ed that lawmakers should address the VA’s problems with action rather than just throwing more money at the department.
The VA still has plenty of work to do to ensure veterans are getting the care they earned. A report last month found that the VA isn’t reliably tracking wait times for both VA care and community care. Changes brought on by the VA MISSION Act will hopefully help solve that problem.
