The Topline
Key data points

At one Asphalt Art project in Cincinnati, Ohio, murals tripled driver compliance with stop signs. At another in Tallahassee, Florida, colorful crosswalks doubled the percentage of walkers choosing that route. Now, 25 new Asphalt Art Initiative projects are coming to cities in the U.S., Mexico, and Canada.

Five cutting-edge ideas just won the 2023 Earthshot Prize, providing them with a financial boost and technical support to expand on innovations that can help repair the planet this decade.

In New York City, only 8% of streets have dedicated bike lanes. A recent study found an unexpected solution to improve road safety in cities around the world: narrowing traffic lanes. It was one of many innovative public health ideas presented at the recent Bloomberg American Health Summit.

We're less than two weeks away from COP28, the UN Climate Change Conference. The Bloomberg Countdown to COP has tracked 95 climate actions in the lead-up to this year's event.

25 Cities Win Asphalt Art Initiative Grants

The Asphalt Art Initiative has added color and energy to streets and intersections around the world (see some of the Before and After transformations here). Bringing public art to those shared roads has also made them safer for walkers, bikers, and drivers who use them every day. Last week we announced 25 cities in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico that will receive grants for Asphalt Art installations that use design to improve street safety, bringing the total number of projects to 90 since 2020. Find out which cities will receive grants, and how their projects will improve safety for their residents.

Can Visiting a Museum or Joining a Choir Benefit Your Health?

A converted public plaza in Milan

"Someday soon, in addition to prescribing medication or therapy, doctors may begin directing patients to visit a museum or join a choir," writes David Andersson from the Bloomberg Philanthropies Arts team. "The growing practice of 'social prescribing' is a way for healthcare providers to address patients' health and wellbeing by connecting them to a range of nonclinical services, often taking the form of community arts and cultural activities." On our blog, we look at research exploring the connection between arts and health, and early indications that "prescribing" cultural experiences can help patients improve outcomes.
