In 2022, Americans voted in record numbers, with 52.2% of the citizen voting-age population participating. Still, 30% of eligible Americans remain unregistered to vote. This gap in registration disproportionately impacts low-income individuals, communities of color, and young people.
A majority of these unregistered but eligible Americans reside in the 26 states that have yet to implement automatic voter registration. It’s time to close the gap and implement automatic voter registration nationwide, now.
Pennsylvania is the latest state to enact automatic voter registration to boost access and increase civic participation. Automatic voter registration is key to strengthening our democracy by eliminating barriers to voting participation.
When you renew or obtain official identification, such as a driver’s license, you must provide information such as proof of identity, residency, and age. The same information you need to register to vote! We can simplify the process of voter registration by automatically registering eligible voters when they renew or get an ID.
Participation is the key to democracy. Let’s allow all Americans a barrier-free voting experience. Join us as we call on the remaining states across the nation to enact automatic voter registration policies immediately.
Thank you,
Democratic Values
