** Introducing Freedom Monument Sculpture Park
------------------------------------------------------------
Freedom Monument Sculpture Park ([link removed]) , which features breathtaking sculptures and original artifacts, offers an immersive, multifaceted examination of American history with a focus on slavery and its legacy. Opening in early 2024, the 17-acre site along the Alabama River features the National Monument to Freedom, which memorializes more than 100,000 family names, honoring enslaved people who were emancipated after the Civil War, and their descendants.

** EJI Expands Anti-Poverty Work with New Health Clinic
------------------------------------------------------------
In 2022, we expanded our anti-poverty work ([link removed]) across Alabama. Earlier this year, EJI opened a new health care clinic in Montgomery that provides free health screenings and services to people released from jail or prison, many of whom suffer from undiagnosed illnesses that can seriously compromise both their health and successful re-entry. We also offer health services to other vulnerable people throughout the state. With hundreds of thousands of uninsured people, access to health care in Alabama remains a critical problem.

** Crisis of Violence in Alabama Prisons Continues
------------------------------------------------------------
EJI continues to advocate for people who are incarcerated in Alabama. For years, we have investigated, documented, and advanced legal challenges over the dozens of homicides, suicides, and serious assaults on incarcerated people as the state’s prisons have become increasingly deadly. In 2022, 274 people died in Alabama’s prisons—the highest number of deaths in the state’s history in one year. Rather than implementing solutions to address the violence, Alabama has committed to building two new prisons ([link removed]) at a projected cost of $1.3 billion.

** EJI Launches New Special Feature Series
------------------------------------------------------------
In October we released the first of several long-form investigative articles and short films in a new EJI special feature series. “The Kiss” ([link removed]) tells the story of the brutal treatment of two young Black boys and the terror their community faced after a white girl kissed them on the cheek. Our second feature, “The Wilmington Massacre of 1898,” ([link removed]) documents an unprecedented coup that drastically changed the racial demographics of a North Carolina city.

------------------------------------------------------------
EJI partnered with the Montgomery Public Schools this year to create the Legacy Scholarship, a program that supports students who have overcome obstacles and demonstrated a commitment to their communities. This year, 19 graduating seniors from nine public high schools in Montgomery each received a $10,000 college scholarship.
