Out-Of-Pocket Burdens

In the November issue of Health Affairs, Didem Bernard and colleagues at the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality explore the multifaceted nature of health care financial pressures ([link removed] ) experienced by US families.

After examining the joint distribution of three financial problems: medical debt, out-of-pocket spending, and care delays related to cost, they find that 27 percent of surveyed adults younger than age sixty-five live in families with at least one of the three financial strains assessed.

When using a broader measure of financial strain, Bernard and coauthors find that 45 percent of adults younger than sixty-five reported financial strain.

These findings could offer context for policies that address the multidimensional nature of health care financial strain.
