We see the connections between our work and the headlines every day

Free Press Action

Friend,

I know there’s a lot competing for your attention right now. Between the coronavirus, the election, climate disasters and political scandals, it's hard to keep up — much less figure out the best way to fight the good fight on any given day.

In our corner of the media-and-tech world, we see the connections between our work and the headlines every day. We see companies like Facebook and Twitter failing to stop the spread of disinformation. We see the impact of shuttered newsrooms in local communities. We see how our nation’s failures to create resilient communications networks threaten lives during climate emergencies.

This is why we’ve been fighting back against the FCC, the Trump administration and Big Media and Tech. Read below to find out how we’ve been putting your donations to work. And if you can, please consider making a contribution to support this work right now.

People like you are the heart of our movement — and because we don't take a cent from business, government or political parties, we rely on your contributions to fuel our work.

Thanks for standing with us amid lots of chaos. We really appreciate it. Check out some of our biggest campaigns and actions from the last couple months below.

Here’s a snapshot of our work so far in 2020:

  • Helping voters make smart choices: We kicked off this year with a comprehensive guide on where the presidential candidates stand on a whole range of media-and-tech issues — from Net Neutrality to surveillance to journalism and beyond.
  • Fighting for Net Neutrality in the states: A federal appeals court made it clear that the FCC can’t stop states from creating their own Net Neutrality laws. We’ve been at work with our partners and allies to boost state bills that could help us win big for the open internet. Just last month, our co-CEO, Craig Aaron, testified in the Maryland legislature on the issue.
  • Saving Lifeline: The FCC’s Lifeline program provides critical funding to help low-income people access phone and internet service. But Trump’s FCC won’t stop trying to shut Lifeline down. We’ve put thousands of signatures on the record at the agency demanding an end to these attacks and filed our own detailed legal comments.
  • Pushing to end government surveillance: The Trump administration could continue a massive spying program if we don’t stop it from reauthorizing Patriot Act provisions that allow the government to collect an astonishing amount of sensitive data about our daily lives — including data on our phone calls, our locations, our financial transactions and even our medical records. Our staffers are making the case with key lawmakers and we’ve been pushing calls into congressional offices to shut this down once and for all.
