CEP Webinar: The Sociology Of Jihadism – Assessing Women And Men Imprisoned
For Islamist Terrorism In France

(New York, N.Y. / Berlin, Germany) – Jihadist radicalization in France has
been the focus of a significant number of scientific articles over the last
fifteen years, but access to relevant sources remains a challenge. This is true
for information on men, and even more so for information on women.
Consequently, work on patterns of women’s commitment to extremist and terrorist
causes remains poorly informed.

Based on a survey conducted in prisons, interviews, and the analysis of
assessment reports produced by prison administration, Dr. Romain Sèze (French
Prison Administration, DAP) has analysed the militant trajectories of 61 women
who had been incarcerated for terrorism-related offenses or were considered
radicalized. He was also able to access andanalyze

, together with Prof. Xavier Crettiez, the assessment files of more than 350
male Islamist terrorists who had been placed in so-calledquartiers d’évaluation
de la radicalization (QER), or areas for the evaluation of radicalization.

The Counter Extremism Project (CEP) is delighted to welcome Dr. Sèze, who will
present his findings and compare the characteristics of women's careers in
Jihadism with those of men. Furthermore, CEP Senior Research Analyst Sofia
Koller will provide an overview of the current approaches to prison management
and rehabilitation in France.

The webinar will be conducted in English via Zoom.
