Governor Moore signs executive order promoting and expanding project labor agreements in Maryland
|
Governor Wes Moore signed an executive order on Friday to promote workforce development in state public works projects, including apprenticeships and project labor agreements.
“We are going to be Maryland strong because we are going to be union strong," Governor Moore said in a statement. "This order will promote apprenticeship training programs and local hiring in high unemployment areas. We’re going to support our businesses and our workers. We can and must do both."
“Today was a big day for workers," said Baltimore/DC-Metro Building Trades Unions President Greg Akerman in a statement. "Strong unions raise standards for all workers — union and non-union alike. Governor Moore today signed an executive order that will level the playing field in so many ways. Underserved communities — women, Veterans, persons of color, and others — will have better access to world-class union apprenticeship training and excellent careers in the building trades."

Celebrating the one-year anniversary of Initiative 82

One year ago DC voters passed Initiative 82, a measure that will phase out the tipped minimum wage so that all workers in DC earn one fair wage. Champions of the measure, including Andy Shallal, CEO of Busboys and Poets; Nikki Cole, Director of Resource Mobilization at Black Organizing for Leadership and Dignity; and DC Councilmember Brianne Nadeau came together last week for a celebration of the measure's first anniversary. DC's not alone in pushing to phase out the tipped minimum wage. Catch up on Baltimore's version of the effort.
