Michigan Gun Groups Sue City of Flint

Michigan's allied gun groups are fighting back against Flint's illegal efforts to keep law-abiding gun owners out of open meetings, in violation of the State's Open Meetings Act.

In late October, Flint Mayor Sheldon Neeley placed metal a detector outside of Flint City Council meetings and unilaterally declared City Hall a "gun-free zone." While he claimed this was pursuant to a local court order, the local court itself has made no such pronouncement. State law is clear; meetings of public bodies must be open to the general public to ensure that everyone, gun owners included, may take part in the democratic process.

It is wrong to make law-abiding people choose between their own personal protection and access to open government, especially in areas of high crime. The lawsuit seeks a court order to stop the ongoing illegal activity and other relief associated with intentional violations of the law.
