For over 100 years, Puerto Ricans have been American citizens without the full benefits of American citizenship. They deserve the same fundamental rights the rest of us enjoy, and the ability to determine their future.
Despite being citizens, Puerto Rico’s status as a territory means the more than 3 million residents cannot vote for the president of the United States, have voting power in Congress, or have access to federal resources like the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. The Puerto Rico Status Act would authorize a federally sponsored referendum to resolve Puerto Rico’s current political status and ensure Puerto Ricans can decide whether they would like independence, sovereignty in free association with the United States, or statehood.
