Hey John,
Ever wondered what the do's and don'ts are of interacting with police? Ever curious about how to properly speak to the police? Ever wanted to learn the role of a Police Liaison? During demonstrations, the police liaison is the only point of contact between the police and an activist group, and advocates for the needs of the group. Even if you don't take on the Police Liaison role, in this day and age of rampant police misconduct, it is important for us to be trained on how to act around the police. This is the time to come and ask questions, set goals for learning the skills you would need to be in this role, and gain knowledge about how to interact with police! Join us at the Police Liaison Training, Saturday March 14th, 2 PM at the Berkeley Animal Rights Center.
If you're interested in getting more involved in this active community, apply to become a chapter member at dxe.io/apply.
Here are the other events we have happening this week (all taking place at the Berkeley Animal Rights Center, 2425 Channing Way, unless otherwise noted). Action events are highlighted in blue and community events are highlighted in orange -- both are crucial to our movement!
- Tuesday, March 10th, 5:30 PM: Holding Our Leaders Accountable: Public Comment at Berkeley City Council - In September of 2018 the Berkeley City Council passed a resolution mandating city meetings and facilities serve plant based meals on Mondays. This resolution was adopted in the face of an “existential Climate Emergency” and endorsing a “citywide emergency mobilization effort to [curb] greenhouse gas emissions as quickly as possible.” We have learned that the city council is not enforcing green Mondays. Berkeley City Council needs to be held accountable as our elected leadership of the city. We will be making public comment asking the Berkeley City Council to lead by following the pledge they made over a year ago. Meet us at 1231 Addison St, Berkeley, CA.
- Saturday, March 14th , 11 AM: Meetup: How You Can Go to the Frontlines - Frontline Surveillance is low-risk investigations that take place from public property. Small teams taking minimal risks can have a big impact to expose cruelty. Ana Mehl is speaking about the accomplishments of our frontline surveillance activists. She will be sharing a few stories from various frontline teams. We will also be showing an amazing video one of our teams filmed while doing frontline surveillance. Brunch will also be announced soon and as always there will be fresh, hot coffee!
- Saturday, March 14th, 7 PM: ¡Latinx Fiesta! - Calling all Latinx people and Latin American culture admirers! Join us for an evening of food, dancing, and fun with friends. If you are able to, please bring a vegan Latinx dish to share. We we will be serving Uruguayan food and encourage everyone to communicate in Spanish and/or Portuguese!
- Sunday, March 15th, 11 AM: Pigeon First Aid: March - Every day there are hundreds of birds throughout the city of San Francisco who have strings and hair tightly wrapped around their toes, causing immense pain. Eventually their toes lose circulation, become amputated, or develop severe infections. We can help our bird friends by removing the string before the damage becomes too serious, providing medical care, and releasing them back to their flocks! Come join us at this clinic to get hands-on practice with pigeon first aid. No experience needed! We will be meeting outside Citibank at 245 Market St, right by Embarcadero BART.
