John,

Thanksgiving is a time to express gratitude with our families and celebrate community with our neighbors. But for many Texans, Thanksgiving is a time of added stress and fear due to food insecurity.

According to Feeding Texas, 1 in 8 Texans do not have access to sufficient food to meet their basic needs. (That’s nearly 4 million people, more than the combined population of Dallas and Houston). In every Texas county, children, seniors, veterans, and working families do not have consistent access to food for an active, comfortable lifestyle.

The holidays worsen the effects of food insecurity. Children don’t have access to school lunch programs. Lower temperatures may mean making a choice between paying the heating bill or buying groceries. Delving even deeper, southern regions of the United States with higher rates of Black, Hispanic, and immigrant populations face food insecurity as a result of systemic inequality that has led to disparities in policies, wealth, and employment.

I am running for Congress to end food insecurity and ensure that all of our neighbors in TX-32 can thrive. By practicing an attitude of gratitude, we all can help elevate our community.

I invite you to join the fight to end food insecurity and build community by visiting the websites of one of these local organizations:
