A bad boss a day keeps the employee away—or at least highly irritable. Unless you’re a muppet working on Sesame Street, you’ve likely encountered some version of The Simpson’s Mr. Burns when clocking into a miserable job. While they might not always be as sinister as to suggest to “release the hounds,” a bad boss typically has a penchant for ruining your day with an outburst or passive aggressive email. But some workers stand to be more affected by it than others.

So finds a group of researchers from the Stevens Institute of Technology and University of Illinois Chicago. Their newly published peer-reviewed study looked at bosses and workers from more than 40 companies in South Korea as well as hundreds of responses from students in the U.S. to gauge how much an abusive supervisor impacts performance. Ranking interviewees based on whether they prioritize either career advancement or keeping their job, the researchers found that the former group of go-getters is more likely to be deterred by a rampaging boss.

That’s not in line with what the researchers expected. They initially predicted a bad boss would shape behavior for both those seeking to climb the career ladder and those focused on job security. But those who are motivated by advancement are “strongly affected” by toxic management and cut back on “taking-charge behavior,” while the other group was more likely to continue taking charge. “That’s a very surprising finding,” researcher Howie Xu said.

The global digital advertising industry is estimated to be $600 billion and growing. While Facebook and other social media sites are popular for advertising, much of the campaign spend dedicated to the internet is distributed across millions of websites and apps, and there’s little oversight and moderation from the adtech companies that monetize them. As advertisers handed off day-to-day operations to a bewilderingly complex digital advertising supply chain, companies often don’t know where their ads are ending up — including on sites that spew disinformation and hate-speech. This represents an acute reputational risk at a time when consumers are increasingly making buying decisions based on personal values and brand associations. Companies need to take three steps: check your ad campaigns, avoid brand safety technology, and demand cash refunds.

How much of your company’s ad budget funds disinformation? You might believe the answer to be “none.” After all, most reputable brands don’t actively seek to run ads alongside conspiracy theorists, white supremacists, and troll farms. Unfortunately, that’s no guarantee. If you’re not routinely auditing your programmatic ad buys or partnering directly with the websites you want to run ads on, it’s highly likely that — by default — your brand is directly contributing to the disinformation economy.

Walmart is turning down the lights and sounds for people with sensory disabilities - Fortune

Walmart is extending a program that is aimed at making its stores a less chaotic environment, which should be a welcome change for people with sensory disabilities, including autism and ADHD.

The retailer has announced that beginning Nov. 10, all stores will offer sensory-friendly hours from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. local time, every day of the week. That’s going to mean no in-store radio, lower light settings where possible, and the stores’ TV wall changed to a static image.

The company originally offered the more peaceful shopping period during a couple of hours on Saturdays during back-to-school shopping.
