John – Most of my fellow Idahoans will recognize this image.

An aerial photo of the Snake River bordering Idaho (on the left) and Washington state (on the right).

For everyone else, that’s a picture of the Snake River, taken from Lewiston, ID, overlooking the border with Washington state.

Women who live on the right side of this photo have access to critical medical care and are empowered to make their own decisions. Women who live on the left side do not.

Women who live on the right side of this photo have full and equal rights protected under law. Women who live on the left side have been compared to livestock by Idaho Republicans.

Abortion has long been under attack in Idaho, and many Idahoans already cross into Washington state and Oregon to access the reproductive care they need. But now the Idaho GOP is trying to make it harder to do even that.

Idaho’s abortion travel ban (which charges anyone who helps a pregnant person under the age of 18 cross state lines for an abortion with a felony) is currently tied up in the courts and unenforceable. But this isn’t just an Idaho problem.

Police in some Texas counties are empowered to pull over anyone they suspect of “trafficking” someone to receive an abortion out of state. And more states are pushing for similar restrictions.

House Republicans, now under the leadership of the ultra-fundamentalist, far-right Speaker Mike Johnson, have repeatedly stated their goal of passing a federal ban on abortion. If they get their way, it won’t matter WHAT side of that picture you live on.

We need a federal law that guarantees our bodily autonomy and women’s right to get an abortion nationwide, which I will fight for in Congress if you help me flip this seat next year.

This doesn’t just impact abortions. Women with high risk pregnancies are having to travel further and further just to access basic prenatal care thanks to Idaho hospitals shutting down their maternity wards over the legal liability posed by our extreme abortion bans.

This impacts poor working class women the most, who don’t have the resources (or the time off from work) to travel out of state for basic healthcare needs.

I can’t stop thinking about that photo, John. The idea that people living on one side of the river are free to make their own decisions about their own bodies, and people living on the other side – the Idaho side – are not.

It’s wrong. It’s dangerous. And it has to be stopped.

We only need to flip 5 seats nationwide for Democrats to take back the House majority and end this national nightmare.

Help me get to Congress next year and I will fight for ALL of us to live free.

David Roth

David Roth is a single, gay dad running for Idaho’s Second Congressional District. We’re going up against a GOP incumbent who has been in this seat for almost 25 years. It’s time for change in Idaho, and our grassroots campaign is building on the momentum that began in David’s race for U.S. Senate last cycle. The GOP is not planning to defend this seat, so we plan to take it from them and help Democrats retake the House majority next year. We’d love your support to build a solid campaign to bring progress to Idaho and the country.
