Abortion has long been under attack in Idaho, and many Idahoans already cross into Washington state and Oregon to access the reproductive care they need. But now the Idaho GOP is trying to make it harder to do even that.
Idaho’s abortion travel ban (which charges anyone who helps a pregnant person under the age of 18 cross state lines for an abortion with a felony) is currently tied up in the courts and unenforceable. But this isn’t just an Idaho problem.
Police in some Texas counties are empowered to pull over anyone they suspect of “trafficking” someone to receive an abortion out of state. And more states are pushing for similar restrictions.
House Republicans, now under the leadership of the ultra-fundamentalist, far-right Speaker Mike Johnson, have repeatedly stated their goal of passing a federal ban on abortion. If they get their way, it won’t matter WHAT side of that picture you live on.
We need a federal law that guarantees our bodily autonomy and women’s right to get an abortion nationwide, which I will fight for in Congress if you help me flip this seat next year.
