Dysfunction will remain the status quo

“We need our nation’s election watchdog back on the job — with commissioners who are committed to enforcing the law. While we want a functional FEC, confirming nominee Trey Trainor would have the opposite effect. Although his confirmation would restore a quorum to the commission, his record strongly suggests dysfunction would prevail. The Senate must only confirm nominees who are committed to upholding the law to ensure that the FEC can enforce federal campaign finance law.”

John,

In a few hours, the Senate Committee on Rules and Administration will hold a confirmation hearing for President Trump’s FEC nominee, Trey Trainor. If the Senate confirms him, the agency would regain its quorum and be open for business for the first time since September 2019.

Unfortunately, this is not good news. Why? Because Trainor’s record suggests he would only make things worse at the broken agency responsible for enforcing our campaign laws.

We need a FEC that is committed to enforcing the law and must reopen with commissioners that will end its dysfunction. Sign your name today!

Here’s what our Executive Director, Meredith McGehee had to say upon hearing news of the confirmation hearing:

[R]eopening the Federal Election Commission with a nominee who does not think we should enforce the nation’s campaign finance laws will only make matters worse. The best way to protect our elections — and increase public confidence in them — is for the president to nominate, and the Senate to confirm, individuals who will put their constitutional oaths to uphold the law above personal ideological views. Anything short of that will only continue the dysfunction at the FEC.

The FEC has been broken for far too long. But it is unacceptable to nominate someone who has questioned transparency in our campaign finance system and won’t enforce the law.

We need our election watchdog back on the job, and we need to make sure that it’s committed to the rule of law.

Add your name and join us in our call for a functional FEC that is committed to upholding the law.
