John, So many of us have childhood memories of loving monarch butterflies, chasing them in the yard, and squealing with delight when they landed on our shoulders or let us hold them in our hands. But that joyous experience is becoming a thing of the past across the country, as the monarch butterfly is literally vanishing across much of the United States. Monarchs have declined by more than 80% in the eastern U.S., and in western states, they've declined by more than 90%.1 There's still time to save the monarch. The Biden administration can take a huge step forward by protecting the monarch under the Endangered Species Act -- and Environment Colorado is mobilizing grassroots support to convince Interior Secretary Deb Haaland to do just that. Will you make a donation to help save the monarch butterfly in North America? Monarch butterflies are truly amazing creatures. These large, brilliantly colored butterflies can travel as far as 3,000 miles -- over several generations -- on their journey to beat the cold of winter, and their migration zone stretches all the way from Canada to Mexico.2 However, habitat destruction, pesticides and the loss of milkweed -- the sole source of food for monarch caterpillars -- are jeopardizing the monarch's existence.3 Unfortunately, these iconic pollinators are not getting the legal protection they need to survive and recover. We know that we can solve this problem because we've seen species recover after receiving protections under the Endangered Species Act, which overall has a success rate of 99% at preventing extinction.4 Environment Colorado is continuing to work on tackling climate change, saving the bees, and more. But we can't afford any further delays in the effort to save the monarch butterfly before it dies out completely in the U.S. Will you donate today? Yes, I'll donate today to help save the monarch butterfly. Thank you, Ellen Montgomery Your donation will be used to support all of our campaigns to protect the environment, from saving the bees and protecting public lands, to standing up for clean water and fighting climate change. None of our work would be possible without supporters like you. Environment Colorado may transfer up to $50 per dues-paying member per year into the Environment Colorado Small Donor Committee. |
