John,
So far this year, the U.S. has experienced natural disasters costing $57.6 billion in disaster relief and claiming 253 lives – this is on track to be a record high.
Private hazard insurance costs are rising astronomically, undermining property values and driving home purchasing costs to unaffordable levels in areas prone to climate disasters.
Our government is not prepared to cope with the continued disasters brought on by the climate crisis. We need a complete overhaul of federal disaster relief.
Congress needs to make securing an overhaul of federal disaster relief a top priority. Consolidating our existing disaster relief programs and implementing preventative preparation will benefit Americans and better predict governmental responses and costs.
The climate crisis is here – that’s inarguable. We need to have a concrete response system in place that will protect the American people while we continue to combat this crisis.
Sign the petition: We need a reformed disaster relief system for declaring natural disasters and distributing federal aid.
Thank you,
Democratic Values
