John, before you do your Thanksgiving shopping this weekend, check out this message from a grocery worker at Trader Joe’s. Maeg’s union has faced harsh opposition from corporate bosses. We need a strong labor movement to have a strong Social Security system. Please, read Maeg’s email and then sign her urgent petition in solidarity to fight against union busting!
John,
We’ve told you about the many ways Trader Joe’s management is using every trick in the book to keep crew members from organizing, and one of the worst ways they do this is captive audience meetings.
Captive audience meetings sound just as bad as they are—they’re intimidation tools used to force workers to listen to anti-union rhetoric to keep them from collectively organizing. When you’re on the clock and being cornered by management, it’s hard to walk away or speak up in favor of the benefits of unionizing.
Trader Joe’s and other major corporations like Amazon and Starbucks know this which is why captive audience meetings are one of their favorite ways to union bust.
Now, state governments are fighting back and six states have already enacted legislation to ban captive audience meetings.
We need to see these protections for workers rolled out in every state in the country. Sign the petition and tell your governor to ban captive audience meetings!
Captive audience meetings are nothing more than a union-busting tactic designed to drain our energy and create a culture of intimidation and fear.
Employees shouldn’t fear retaliation for union support, and we shouldn’t be held hostage by being required to listen to anti-union rhetoric while on the clock.
We’re putting Trader Joe’s and other corporations that continue infringing on workers' rights on notice: captive audience meetings must come to an end. Tell your Governor to ban captive audience meetings!
Thanks for all that you do,
Maeg Yosef Trader Joe’s United
