Tomorrow marks one year since the deadly shooting at Club-Q, a LGBTQ bar in Colorado Springs, CO. Patrons entered Club Q as they did any other weekend, ready for a fun night out at a space designed to feel safe and affirming. But instead of love, club goers were met with hatred and violence when a gunman used homemade ghost guns to kill five people and injure more than 20 others.
In recent years, ghost guns have proliferated across the country, becoming the weapon of choice for prohibited purchasers. This week also marked six years since a gunman in Tehama, CA, used a homemade ghost gun in his eight-hour shooting spree, firing at pedestrians, vehicles, and children in their school, killing five people and wounding numerous others. Again and again, these firearms devastate community after community because they are, by design, the perfect crime guns. Ghost guns are unserialized firearms that, before the Biden Administration took action, anyone — including minors and prohibited purchasers — could purchase WITHOUT a background check, NO questions asked.
We at Brady understand the risks these firearms pose, and over the past two years, we’ve taken decisive action against them across Congress, the courts, and our communities.
In honor of the lives lost in Colorado Springs, CO, we helped pass a state law banning ghost guns, building on bans we passed in California, Delaware, Illinois, and New York. In the courts, Brady is suing Polymer80 — the nation’s largest manufacturer of homemade ghost guns — for fueling gun violence in Baltimore, MD. And federally, we helped get the Biden-Harris Administration’s rule to regulate ghost guns over the finish line.

Brady’s Show Gun Safety Campaign Engages Hollywood Community to Change Firearm Culture in America |
If we are to end gun violence, we must change the culture and behaviors around firearms in America — and that’s what Brady’s Show Gun Safety Campaign is all about. Last week, Brady’s Show Gun Safety Campaign united members of the Hollywood community — including producers, directors, showrunners, writers, and more — to discuss how they can use their power as culture makers to model gun safety on screen.
Hosted at the Creative Arts Agency, one of the nation’s leading talent agencies, panelists included Brady President Kris Brown, Team ENOUGH Founding Member Aalayah Eastmond, showrunner Glen Mazzara (Walking Dead), TV writer-producer Melinda Hsu (Lost), screenwriter Sean Tretta (12 Monkeys), and Contributing Editor at The Hollywood Reporter Stacey Wilson Hunt. |
Together, panelists shared their experiences, insights, and best practices about how culture makers can create a safer America through simple, creative, and powerful actions that foster positive behavior change. Guests also enjoyed a screening of the Siskel/Jacobs's short documentary MEMORIAL, which chronicles the July 4th parade shooting in Highland Park, IL, with a focus on uplifting survivor voices.
Today, there are more firearms than people in America, and we know it’s likely guns will continue to play a role in the shows and films we watch. Our Show Gun Safety campaign does not ask anyone to stop showing guns on screen. But our nation’s content creators and storytellers have the power to model safety norms and show the consequences of reckless gun use — depictions that help guide us toward a safer America.

APPLICATIONS OPEN: Team ENOUGH Youth Advocacy Training Program |
EXCITING NEWS: Team ENOUGH, Brady’s youth-led initiative, just opened applications for the Youth Advocacy Training Program in Florida and Virginia!
Formerly known as the Team ENOUGH Lobbying Collective, the Advocacy Training Program is the only national, youth-led program that trains and mobilizes young people to meet with lawmakers and push for critical gun reform measures. Now in its fifth year, Team ENOUGH is seeking youth (ages 13-26) to apply and become change makers in Florida and Virginia. Haven’t advocated for gun violence prevention legislation before? That’s OK! Members will participate in valuable, hands-on trainings with policy and grassroots experts over a period of six weeks. Then, members take those skills straight to state capitols, urging lawmakers to pass gun violence prevention legislation, and pushing back against dangerous policies.
Gun violence is the leading cause of death for children and teens in the United States. That’s why it’s so important for lawmakers to hear directly from young people on this issue. So if you know a young person who is ready to make their voice heard and fight for legislative solutions to end this epidemic, encourage them to apply today!

Change Makers in Our Communities: Howard Miller |
This week, we’re proud to feature Howard Miller, a Vietnam-era veteran and chapter leader of Brady Northern Illinois. Howard has always centered the needs of his community and country in his work: After serving four years in the United States Navy as an air traffic controller, he became the president of the Veterans Club at Crystal Lake College in Illinois, helping enroll veterans in the GI Program to ensure they had the resources they needed to return to civilian life.
It wasn’t until the heartbreaking shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, TX, that Howard became a gun violence prevention activist. In his words, he “had ENOUGH and knew he had to act.” He soon found Brady, drawn to its bipartisan legacy, and went on to form the Brady Northern Illinois Chapter.
Howard’s primary focus is passing legislation to require the safe storage of firearms, which has the power to save lives by reducing family fire, which includes firearm suicide, unintentional shootings, and firearm misuse. Building pressure on the Illinois legislature, Howard played an integral role in passing a safe gun storage resolution in Kane County, IL, and encouraged state lawmakers to do the same. Howard is also on the board of the League of Women Voters, where he serves as the point person for gun violence prevention legislation in the state.
Howard is a fierce advocate for gun violence prevention, and coming on the heels of Veterans Day, we thank him for his service and commitment to his community and country.
