Dear John

As we look ahead to Christmas and the New Year, we want to let you know that we've made the decision to pause Star Count for 2024. This is so we can focus our energies on the upcoming General Election and ensure that the next government is one that protects our countryside and works for rural communities – scroll down to read more.

Earlier this month, King Charles III delivered his first speech as King for the State Opening of Parliament. With the climate emergency the greatest threat currently facing our countryside, we’re disappointed that the speech confirmed an intended Bill supporting new oil and gas licences. There’s an evident lack of commitment to renewables such as rooftop solar – a solution that could protect precious countryside, reduce our energy bills and help us in the race to net zero. Read our full reaction here.

In other news, we’ve been busy working on some new research on the lack of affordable and social housing in rural areas. We’re excited to share that we’ll be launching the report at an event in the House of Lords on Tuesday 28 November – more news on this soon.

Star Count paused for 2024

With a general election expected in 2024, next year will be make or break for our countryside. For this reason, we have decided to pause Star Count for 2024. This will let us target our finite resources and convince political leaders that the priorities in our manifesto are best for the country. Although there will be no CPRE Star Count in 2024, we will remain an active member of the dark skies community and continue to advocate for reductions in light pollution.

Eyes on the Bill: lessons from a year and a half of legislative campaigning

Influencing legislation is critical to building a planning system fit for people, nature and the climate. Over the last year and a half, we’ve been working both on our own and in collaboration to influence the Government’s Levelling Up and Regeneration Bill (LURB), which has now become an Act of Parliament. Our Campaigns Officer Mark Robinson shares about the lessons learned and how it’s all been worth it.

Trustees' Week 2023

The first week of November was Trustees Week. Over the past few months, some particularly exceptional trustees have been nominated by their local CPRE to receive a volunteer award in recognition of their achievements. Read about the trustees that received awards this year for their outstanding contributions.

Celebrating our green spaces

We recently asked you to share a video of you in your favourite local green space as part of our #LoveGreenSpaces project. Thank you for all your wonderful submissions telling us about your favourite local green space - the submission date has now passed and we're pleased to share the compilation video. Watch it on our website linked below!

Wildlife to look out for in November

From starlings to spindle berries, there’s plenty to look out for in nature before autumn ends and winter begins. As the nights pull in and the days cool off, nature writer Alexandra Pearce-Broomhead gives some insight into the sort of wildlife you might spot in the countryside in November.
