Shell is trying to silence us but together we will resist

You might remember that back in January, six brave Greenpeace activists managed to board and occupy a moving Shell oil platform. The platform was on its way towards the North Sea to unlock new oil wells. Our demand was clear: Shell must stop drilling for new oil and gas, and start paying up for causing decades of climate damage.

The protest continued for 13 days and almost 4,000km. During this time, Shell reported record annual profits of nearly $40bn. But they won’t pay a penny towards fixing the climate chaos they’ve caused.

Now, they’re threatening us with a damages claim for $8.6 million – in a desperate attempt to strong-arm us into silence. 

But we can’t let them get away with this. Shell may have an army of lawyers but we’ve got millions of people just like you on our side and if we unite, we can overpower Big Oil.

We helped crash Big Oil’s Party

Back in October, activists took a message directly to oil bosses at “The Oil and Money Conference” demanding that they pay up for the climate devastation that they are responsible for.

Greenpeace activists joined Fossil Free London’s “Oily Money Out” action, alongside XR, and Greta Thunberg, to peacefully protest around the luxury hotel venue in an attempt to disrupt the event. They brought portraits from photographer Gideon Mendel’s series Drowning World, of people in their flooded homes, confronting guests with the very real life consequences of their actions.

Climbers abseiled the building unveiling not one, not two, but THREE banners. We even did our first ever TikTok live during the banner drop with a whopping 120,000 people tuning in! With every video, comments and shares get more people inspired by the action we need to take. 

Protesters successfully disrupted the event and led to Wael Sawan the CEO of Shell having to do his keynote speech over Zoom.

And we couldn’t have done it without you! Thousands of supporters rang the hotel where the conference was held to ask them to cancel and took other digital actions such as signing petitions and sharing social posts to keep the pressure on. Whether you give a monthly gift, sign petitions or engage with us online or on the streets, nothing changes without you. 

How you helped turn the tide

Incredible news! The UK government has backed a moratorium on deep sea mining. This is a huge win for our oceans and is down to people like you across the country - and the world - taking action. Thank you for being part of the movement and pushing the government to act. 

This decision protects marine life and carbon sinks from the unknown effects of mining. This win is thanks to people power. Almost 170,000 people like you signed the petition to ban the industry, 3171 people donated to our deep sea mining appeal and every single MP in the UK received emails from supporters calling on them to take action. This also led to Labour coming out against deep sea mining starting too. Thank you for taking action!

But the work to protect our oceans is far from done. The UK is yet to ratify the Global Ocean Treaty even though they pushed for it on the international stage for years. 

A couple of weeks ago, Greenpeace activists placed a giant octo-activist on the riverbank at the foot of Big Ben ahead of the King’s Speech. We were telling the government that its leadership on ocean protection is still in jeopardy and that a continued frenzy to drill for new oil and gas in the North Sea poses serious threats to marine life as well as the climate. Supporters on social media named the octopus Coral, a new mascot for the oceans campaign.

Can you help us double up on this huge win and call on the government to pass the Treaty into law immediately and protect our ocean?

Join Project Climate Vote

A general election is coming soon, and it’s our best shot at pushing for serious climate action. So Greenpeace is uniting the British public to push the next government – whoever it is – to take climate change seriously. This is Project Climate Vote.

We need politicians to be ambitious on climate action. So street by street, town by town, we’re going out door-knocking to recruit a million climate voters. A vote for climate is also a vote for cheaper bills, a vote for better health, a vote for the future. In this digital age, face-to-face conversations make a huge impact!

The Project Climate Vote volunteer community has been smashing it! Since we launched in September together we have:

• knocked nearly 8,000 doors
• had more than 3,000 climate conversations
• recruited more than 2,000 climate voters (70% of people!)
• given out more than 1,400 "I'm a Climate Voter" posters
• and we now have nearly 700 door knocking trained volunteers across the UK!

And this is just the beginning...we now need you to get involved to help us scale up the campaign! 

And if door knocking isn't for you, stay tuned! There will be lots of other ways to get involved in the new year.

Ban private jets 

Private jets emit massive amounts of carbon and are only available to the ultra-wealthy. It's unacceptable that a small percentage of people can contribute so much to the climate crisis, while the rest of us bear the consequences. Tell Prime Minister Rishi Sunak: Ban private jets immediately.

Sign to help stop sewage pollution 

Raw sewage is destroying our beaches, rivers and waterways. Stripped of funds and power, environmental agencies can’t police these crimes against nature. But it doesn’t have to be this way. Tell the government: Properly fund environmental agencies.

Ban disposable vapes

More than a million disposable vapes are thrown away every week in the UK. They’re littering our communities, leaking chemicals into the environment and endangering local wildlife. Add your name to tell the government to ban disposable vapes.

An artist collective led by JC Niala developed an artwork that represents this waiting list, who took it to the government and then used it to reclaim land from Tesco and the industrial food system.
