John,
What if we could make big polluters pay for the damage they are causing?
This is a decision the International Court of Justice (ICJ) will soon have to take.
Petro-states and fossil fuel lobbies are terrified of what this could mean for them and are trying to water down this judgment.
We have a plan to prevent that from happening: international bodies like the EU have 3 months to submit arguments to influence the court. The EU really cares about their image as a climate leader – so we can hold them to it! Let’s make sure the EU tells the court that nothing is more important than protecting the people from the climate crisis. Are you ready?
John, urge the EU to hold big polluters accountable and protect our future generations at the ICJ.
There is no international law that holds countries accountable to protect their citizens from the climate crisis. But, the ICJ could soon make this happen. The court could give us, the people, the power to stop the worst polluters – corporations and states – and sue them for the loss and damage they cause.
Cynthia Houniuhi, the president of the Pacific Islands Students Fighting Climate Change who began this quest for justice four years ago shares: “The environment that sustains us is disintegrating before our eyes. I don’t want to show a picture to my child one day of my island. I want my child to be able to experience the same environment and the same culture that I grew up in.”
They are asking for the help of the Ekō community, to move the EU to take the bolder and stronger climate action that our world so desperately needs. Are you in?
Yes - I will call on the EU to champion human rights and climate justice in front of the ICJ.
